DREAMING
Like trying to fall asleep,
Allow me to shut my eyes,
Take a deep breath or two, of you
And let my body rest between them,
Before I ask where you learnt how,
To tie lungs like a ribbon,
And gift me this breath,
It was yours to take,
These fingers I use to count,
The days and nights like a calendar,
Had spaces for you to put yours,
Like a chain link to my heart,
If I could string this together,
I would draw out the picture,
On heaven's background,
Like it was a gallery of you,
Portraits of starry nights,
Some wine and table for two,
A joke here, a sob story there,
A conversational platter,
Late hours behind fogged windows,
When the nights got cold on us,
We’d keep warm in conversation,
Covered snug in laughter,
You were the promises I made,
Before God and before man,
You were the chest for my heart,
Please keep it under lock and key,
I've spent too many a night,
Trying to catch a wink,
So if I'm only dreaming,
Don't wake me,
